We had the opportunity to catch up with California winemaker David Coventry of Talbott Vineyards at the 2019 Vancouver International Wine Festival. We asked the Monterey County native for an overview of the Monterey AVA and about the current day happenings at Talbott Vineyards. Talbott sits on some 500 acres located in the sub-region of Santa Lucia Highlands, near Monterey Bay, at the top of the long region. The winery first planted vines in 1972 and has won great acclaim for its Burgundian-style chardonnay and pinot noir which love the fog and ocean breeze that arrive in the afternoon, slowing down ripening of the grapes.
Monterey Bay, the top of the region, is just a scenic two hour drive south from San Francisco, just a half and hour less than the trip to Napa Valley.
